Häfele opens new state-of-the-art logistics center in Nagold

Häfele officially opened its new distribution center on the Wolfsberg industrial park in Nagold on July 17, 2026

Häfele is making a powerful statement about its long-term growth with this opening. The investment underscores Häfele’s commitment to its home town of Nagold in the northern Black Forest and in Germany as a business location. The new building is part of a comprehensive future-looking project that combines state-of-the-art logistics facilities with spaces for innovation, events, and meeting up.

At the heart of the new logistics facility are an automated shuttle warehouse for small parts, modern goods receiving and shipping areas, and intelligent conveyor and packaging technologies. The new building is directly connected to the existing distribution center via a bridge approximately 110 meters long. This means small and large parts can be efficiently brought together and shipped to customers in a single shipment. At the same time, the picking and packing of small parts will be significantly more efficient and automated. 

Efficient material flows and a high level of automation

The new logistics facility will serve as the central hub for handling all small parts in the future. The facility features 96,000 storage locations and 132 shuttle vehicles. The system is supported by automated conveyor technology as well as ten workstations each for goods receiving, order picking, repacking, and value-added services.

Intelligent software automatically calculates the optimal box size for each order (case calculation). This significantly reduces packaging material and shipping volume, with carton wedges, automatic document insertion, and labeling ensuring efficient shipping 

Migration without interrupting operations

The gradual relocation of small-parts logistics from the existing building to the new facility began as soon as the new logistics facility was commissioned. The existing building will continue to handle medium- and large-sized parts, for which capacity had already been expanded in 2022 with the construction of the new high-bay warehouse 4. The phased implementation of this realignment and the move is supported by detailed migration and relocation planning.

Sustainability built in from the start

Sustainability and future-proofing were a focus as early as the expansion planning phase at Wolfsberg. 

Approximately 28,000 metric tonnes of demolition material were reused for construction, as well as recycled concrete. An ice storage system with a capacity of approximately 2.1 million liters uses natural energy sources for heating and cooling. Supported by photovoltaic systems and heat pumps, this enables the building to operate with a net-zero energy footprint. The construction, meeting the KfW-40 standard, underscores the company’s commitment to resource conservation and future-proofing.

Sustainability was also consistently taken into account within the logistics processes. The containers used consist largely of recycled material, while modern shuttle and lift technologies reduce energy consumption by recovering energy during braking. An automated height-reduction system also reduces transport volume and helps reduce the number of essential truck trips and, consequently, CO₂ emissions. 

The “goods-to-person” principle automatically delivers items to ergonomic picking workstations. A light-guided picking system (pick-by-light) indicates the correct picking location and facilitates fast, low-error processing. 

Long-term development of the Nagold site

The go-live of the new facility is part of a strategic program for the future designed to prepare Häfele’s logistics site for the demands of the coming decades. io has been supporting the company in the strategic development of its logistics structures, planning and implementation of new building and warehouse capacities, the design of the IT landscape, and project management since 2017. The goal is to meet ever-increasing demands for delivery speed, service levels, and growth through high-performance, interconnected, and sustainable structures.
