io supports premium car manufacturer in the transformation of production towards e-mobility

io lays the foundations for the production of future-oriented vehicle components with a holistic hygiene and logistics protocol, designed to ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and efficiency.

Heidelberg, December 1, 2025

The BMW Group has once again relied on the expertise of io to further develop its production sites. io is supporting the premium car manufacturer as part of a comprehensive transformation project at the Landshut site, by planning and implementing an integrated hygiene and logistics protocol that meets the most stringent standards of technical cleanliness, efficiency and automation.

The project aimed to create an optimal environment for the production of sensitive electromobility components – especially for the “Energy Master”, the central control unit of the high-voltage battery in the upcoming BMW models of its latest “Neue Klasse” generation. io accompanied the BMW Group from development of the concept through the tendering process right up to successful final acceptance throughout the entire project period, which lasted from the beginning of 2023 to the end of 2025.

Holistic hygiene protocol for sensitive production areas

The design within the existing building structure placed special demands on planning and implementation. io first analyzed the space available on site, together with the technical and organizational facilities, then developed a detailed hygiene protocol based on this. This includes clearly defined personnel routes, changing areas, protective clothing and separate cleanliness areas. A graduated ventilation system with pressure cascades ensures controlled air flows and prevents particles transferring between cleanliness zones.

“A hygiene protocol for sensitive production areas involves many considerations – from personnel flows and changing areas to the choice of suitable protective clothing,” explains Max Frentzel, Senior Consultant at io.

Efficient logistics in a brownfield project

The structural and logistical restructuring of the existing building was a key component of the project. io implemented a double-deep high-bay warehouse with twelve aisles and over 30,000 storage spaces as well as an automated small parts warehouse with around 17,900 storage spaces. An electric floor conveyor with 33 vehicles connects the warehouse, loading tunnel and production and enables an end-to-end digitally controlled material flow.

“This significantly reduces the number of manual interventions, from truck unloading to production provision,” says Simon Löwisch, Overall Project Manager and Principal Consultant at io. “Expanding the storage capacity has also saved on long transportation routes.”

Partnership with a future

io is creating the conditions for future-proof production with the project in Landshut, and supporting the BMW Group in implementing its electromobility strategy. The close networking of supply chains, material flows and production processes sustainably reinforces the location’s competitiveness.

“Implementing the new production area with an integrated hygiene and logistics system is another milestone in our successful partnership,” says Adrian Siegler, Partner and Managing Director at io. “We are thrilled to be able to accompany the BMW Group on its journey into the future of e-mobility.”
