With approximately 390,000 employees in 21 European countries, the REWE Group is one of Europe’s largest retail groups. In Germany alone, the group operates approximately 3,800 stores with 170,000 employees. To supply these stores, REWE opened a new, approximately 50,000-square-meter central warehouse in Magdeburg in 2024. Stores in the northern and eastern regions are supplied from here with approximately 20,000 items from the dry goods assortment, which includes items such as pasta, baking ingredients, and canned goods. With a level of automation exceeding 50 percent, the warehouse marks a significant evolutionary step in the company’s central logistics: It is one of the most modern logistics facilities in Europe. From the outset, it was designed and built with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind—as part of the holistic “General Planning // plus” approach, in which io brings together all relevant disciplines.
