Young Conductors of the io

Talented Conductors

Since 2012, the Ludwigshafen Symphonic Wind Orchestra has been led by Dorian Wagner. Last November, however, io employees took the baton. They conducted the 40-member orchestra and, with plenty of fun and a keen sense of rhythm, created unity and harmony—as the highlight of an exclusive workshop. The impact of this special event has been significant: Through the unexpected leadership role, nonverbal communication on stage, and immediate feedback from individual musicians, participants were able to reflect on various aspects of their everyday work lives. After all, there are many parallels between an orchestra and a team of colleagues: Some stand out more with their soft tones, while others really make a splash. One plays first violin, while another adds subtle accents in the background. Some are reliable metronomes, while others deliver magnificent solos.

The performance at the conductor’s podium was preceded by extensive preparation and support from experienced conductors and coaches—as well as a selection process that kicked off the io Talent Program, under which the musical event took place. Its underlying nomination and selection process is transparent and scientifically monitored. It is a multi-stage process—ranging from the nomination of individual colleagues to the final assessment, in which an independent selection team participates.

Individual development programs with a mentor

Those nominees ultimately selected for the talent program participate, together with io management and division heads, in the annual strategy conference as well as in exclusive events—such as, most recently, the conducting workshop. This naturally increases the visibility of these talents even beyond their current areas of responsibility, putting them on the radar for filling new vacancies. In addition, individual development measures, a mentor from the executive board serving as a personal scout, needs-based coaching provided by the HR development team, and the opportunity to contribute to the implementation of current corporate strategy initiatives are integral components of the program.

Ten colleagues were accepted into the io Talent Program during the first two rounds. A lot has happened for them since the program began: They are taking on new challenges in new areas or positions, or are now responsible for key strategic areas. It’s a win-win situation, as everyone benefits from the program’s seamless coordination.
